How to Stop Spam and Promotional Emails in Gmail
"Spam" and "too many promotional emails" feel the same in a cluttered inbox, but they're different problems with different fixes. Sorting them out is the key to a quieter inbox.
True spam: report, don't unsubscribe
Spam is unsolicited mail from senders you never gave your address to — often scams or shady marketers. Never click unsubscribe on these; it just confirms your address works. Instead, select the email and click "Report spam." Gmail's filter learns and routes similar mail away automatically.
Promotional email: unsubscribe and filter
Promotional email comes from legitimate companies you've interacted with — stores, services, newsletters. These you can safely unsubscribe from using the link or Gmail's one-click button. For senders that don't make it easy, a filter that skips the inbox does the job.
Use Gmail's categories
Gmail can auto-sort mail into Primary, Promotions, Social, and Updates tabs. Enabling these keeps marketing email out of your main view without deleting anything. Go to Settings, then Inbox, and turn on the category tabs you want.
Stop giving out your main address
- Use Gmail's "+" trick: yourname+shopping@gmail.com still reaches you but is easy to filter.
- Keep a separate address for sign-ups and one-off purchases.
- Avoid entering your main email into contests and free-download forms.
Clear the existing backlog
Prevention handles the future; you still need to deal with what's already there. Unsubscribe from the promotional senders you don't want, then bulk-delete their backlog. A cleanup tool does both at once across every sender, so you start from a genuinely clean slate.
Want to skip the manual work? SweepMyMail finds every newsletter in your Gmail, unsubscribes in one click, and sweeps away the backlog — reading only sender metadata, never your email content. Scanning your inbox is free.
